How Much Memory Do I Need?

When purchasing a digital camera, you will quickly find that the card that came with your camera is not sufficient. These cards typically hold less than 20 pictures, so you will need to buy another card. Choosing the size of your memory card is not always easy. The more memory you purchase, the more expensive your card will be, but you need to make sure that you have enough room to store the pictures that you will be taking.

First, consider the resolution of your camera. If you have a high-resolution camera, you will need more memory. For example, a 5-megapixel camera can take almost 200 pictures with a 512 MB memory card, but an 8-megapixel camera can only store 140 on that same card. In general, a card that has one to two gigs should be sufficient for most photographers, so start watching the sale flyers and find a good deal on one of these cards.
